It's no secret that selling websites is a BIG business. As a matter of fact, while most other online income opportunities drop precipitously year after year, building (or buying) assets for profit is a business that's expected to grow exponentially for the foreseeable future.
Why is building and selling websites such a great business model?
Because it's an evergreen niche that's never going to go away. As a matter of fact, it's a completely recession proof business as well, as every marketing consultant or economics professor will admit, the key to succeeding in every economy is getting your messages out to the masses.
Every new accountant needs a website. Every new lawyer needs a blog. Every artist needs an online presence to present their passion. Pretty soon... when the yellow pages becomes COMPLETELY obsolete, every business owner will need a Facebook page, some sort of social media message to sell themselves.
Okay, so how do you actually SELL websites for fun and profit?
It's very simple. The secret is to think HYPER local.
You start by registering hyper specific geographically relevant domain names that have great value in your local community.
For example, where I live... I "own" lots and lots of derivations of all kinds of premium professional domain names that are modified with the cities that are most completive in my state.
I could, (and have) simply list the DOMAIN names for sale... and in many cases, sell those for a factor of 100 times what I paid for them.
But what's smarter is to develop them a little bit before you do. For example, I'll typically install a blog with a premium template, have some content created, write a few articles like this one, add some social media features (like a FAQ plugin and BuddyPress, a free community building plugin that works amazingly well) and quite literally, in a day or less, have a VERY valuable asset to sell. (rather than just a simple domain name)
The way you double your income is again, to think LOCAL. People in the buying and selling game are always talking about "flipping" websites. This is, from my vantage point, a HUGE mistake.
You don't want to flip websites, unless the deal is too good to be true. (which is unusual)
Instead, you want to build your own from scratch, in local environments, and then sell them to professionals who have the budgets, the bank accounts and the NEED for a competitive edge.
Remember, the big mistake people make when it comes to buying and selling websites is trying to build generic properties in niche markets and thinking that they have real world value.
Believe it or not, you are NOT going to get much money for the ClickBank oriented affiliate site with a bunch of re-purposed articles on there. The market is too cynical, it's rarely a good investment, and the people who have the money to spend aren't interested.
Conversely, in the "real world" you CAN get lots of cash from a doctor, a real estate agent, a credit company, a finance officer or a lender for something that is geographically desirable, and developed turn key.
It doesn't have to be PERFECT to be profitable. If you can turn 4-6 hours of your time into a $1000 profit on a regular basis a few times a week... it's a MUCH better investment of your time than trying to sell affiliate products, I promise! (not counting on the back end offers you can make to the folks who buy what you build, which is an amazing business opportunity as well!)
